Dental implants in Turkey need two trips for most people: three to five days for the implant placement, then two to three days for the crown three to six months later. The gap is not a scheduling preference — it is the time the bone needs to fuse to the implant. Anyone offering the whole thing in a single week owes you an explanation of why your case is the exception.
Why Are There Two Visits?
An implant is a titanium post placed into the jawbone. Bone cells then grow onto its surface and lock it in place — osseointegration — and that process takes three to six months depending on bone quality and location. Loading a crown onto an implant before it has fused risks losing the implant entirely.
So the two visits are separated by biology, not by the clinic's calendar. The first trip places the implant; the second fits the permanent crown once the fusion is confirmed. In between you go home and get on with your life, usually with a temporary in place if the tooth is visible.
What Happens Day by Day on the First Visit?
Allow three to five days. The schedule is built around one surgical appointment with assessment before it and a check afterwards.
| Day | What happens |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrival, transfer, rest. Consultation, CBCT scan, treatment plan confirmed in writing. |
| Day 2 | Implant placement. Local anaesthetic, sedation available. Temporary fitted where the tooth shows. |
| Day 3 | Rest day. Swelling peaks around now. Soft food, no strenuous activity. |
| Day 4 | Post-operative check. Wound reviewed, aftercare instructions and documents provided. |
| Day 5 | Fly home. Transfer to Izmir arranged. |
Multiple implants or a full arch add a day or two rather than doubling the stay — the surgical appointment is longer, not repeated.

What Makes the Stay Longer?
Several findings extend the first visit, and all of them are identified at the CBCT scan rather than sprung on you mid-treatment.
- Bone grafting. Insufficient bone width or height means grafting first. Minor grafts happen at the same appointment; larger ones may need their own healing period before the implant goes in.
- Sinus lift. Upper back teeth sometimes need the sinus floor raised. Adds a day to the visit and often extends the healing gap.
- Extractions. A tooth removed at the same visit may need the socket to heal before the implant is placed, splitting what looked like one trip into two.
- Active infection. Treated before implant surgery, not alongside it.
- Full-arch cases. More implants, longer surgery, an extra recovery day.
Can It Be Done in One Visit?
Sometimes, through immediate loading — placing a temporary crown or bridge onto the implant on the day of surgery. It works when the bone is dense enough to hold the implant firmly at placement, which the surgeon measures during the procedure rather than predicts beforehand.
Two things are worth understanding. First, the crown fitted that day is temporary; the permanent one still comes later, though it can sometimes be handled remotely with your own dentist. Second, suitability is confirmed in theatre — so a clinic promising immediate loading before it has seen your scan is promising something it cannot yet know.
Full-arch All-on-4 cases are the most common candidates, because splinting several implants together provides the stability that immediate loading requires.
When Can You Fly After Implant Surgery?
Most patients fly two to three days after placement, once the post-operative check is done. Flying itself does not disturb an implant — cabin pressure has no meaningful effect on the surgical site — but the first 48 hours are when swelling peaks and when you would want a clinician nearby if anything looked wrong.
Practical points for the flight home: no alcohol, keep hydrated, avoid a straw, and carry your prescribed painkillers in hand luggage. Book an airport transfer from Izmir rather than arranging your own transport, and choose accommodation close to the clinic such as the Unique Hotel so the daily journey is short.
What Can You Do Between Appointments?
More than people expect, but less on the first two days than they hope. Gentle walking and sightseeing are fine from day three; swimming, sun exposure on the face, alcohol and strenuous exercise are out until your surgeon clears them.
This is why the season matters. A recovery week in October at 24C, walking a quiet coastline, is a very different experience from the same week in August when you are being told to stay out of the sea. Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do I need in Turkey for dental implants?
Three to five days for the first visit covering assessment, implant placement and a post-operative check, then two to three days for the second visit when the permanent crown is fitted, three to six months later. Bone grafting or a sinus lift can add a day or two to the first trip.
Why do dental implants need two trips?
Because the implant must fuse with the jawbone before a crown can be loaded onto it, a process called osseointegration that takes three to six months. Fitting the permanent crown before fusion is complete risks losing the implant. The gap is biological, not administrative.
Can dental implants be completed in one visit?
Sometimes, using immediate loading, where a temporary crown is fitted on the day of surgery. It requires bone dense enough to hold the implant firmly at placement, which the surgeon confirms during the procedure rather than beforehand. Full-arch cases are the most common candidates because splinted implants provide the needed stability.
How soon can I fly after implant surgery?
Most patients fly two to three days after placement, once the post-operative check is complete. Cabin pressure does not affect the implant. The reason to wait is that swelling peaks in the first 48 hours, which is when you would want a clinician nearby.
Will I have a gap in my teeth between the two visits?
Not where the tooth is visible. A temporary crown or bridge is fitted so you are not left with a visible gap during the healing period. Temporaries are for appearance and light function, so your dentist will ask you to avoid biting hard food with them.
What if I need a bone graft?
Minor grafting is usually done at the same appointment as the implant and adds little to the stay. Larger grafts may need their own healing period of several months before the implant can be placed, which turns a two-visit plan into three. This is identified at the CBCT scan, before you travel.
