What is Ear Reshaping ?

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, can improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear. A defect in the ear structure that is present at birth or that becomes apparent with development can be corrected by otoplasty. This procedure can also treat misshapen ears caused by injury.

Otoplasty creates a more natural shape while bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face. Correction of even minor deformities can have profound bene?ts to appearance and self-esteem. If protruding or dis?gured ears bother you or your child, you may consider plastic surgery. The average operation involves an incision behind the back of the ear and some sutures to hold the ears back in place. Sometimes manipulation of cartilage needs to be performed by surgeons to optimise long term results.

What Happens After The Operation?

After the operation both the ears are covered with special dressings, which are held in place by bandages. These are left in place for seven days. One of the hospital nurses or our office will contact you after the operation to ensure that you have no problems during your convalescence. After seven days there is often some bruising and swelling of the ears and this settles over a period of weeks. The sutures behind the ear tissue that are not normally noticeable are dissolving. We will encourage you to wear a headband at night for six weeks to hold the ears in an appropriate position while you are sleeping. The procedure to pin back projecting ears does not interfere with hearing

Recovery

If you have a bandage around your head, keep it clean and dry. You will not be able to wash your hair until after the bandage has been removed.
You might need to wear a headband at night for several weeks to protect your ears while you sleep.
The stitches may come to the surface of the skin or make your ear feel tender. Treat any pain with painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

After 7 to 10 days: The bandage (if used) and stitches are removed (unless they're dissolvable stitches).
After 1 to 2 weeks: Most children can return to school.
After 4 to 6 weeks: Swimming should be OK.
Around 12 weeks: Contact sports should be OK.
